Years ago, the bartender where I waited tables in college (Red Lobster, baby! ..Las Cruces, NM!) gave me advice I still use now when I’m feeling stressed or anxious or annoyed. He told me to write a list of every single thing I was worried about, bothered about, annoyed about, from the big stuff to the petty stuff & in no particular order- a giant brain dump. Then, wait a week before taking the list out crossing off all the things that aren’t that big of a deal anymore. Wait a month & do it again & then a year. Most of the things we stress over turn out to be really minor in the grand scheme of things. Because even on bad days, life IS good….because we HAVE life and a chance to be trailblazer and a chance to change someone else’s life. Besides, God has already written our story and all these details- the stress…the joy…the do-overs and the new beginnings are all part of it.
But then there are the things on that list that are big aches and pains. In the midst of the words on your list that deal with loss and grief and heartache…remember be kind to yourself. Loss never gets easier, it just changes.
“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”
-Zephaniah 3:17 ESV
